The Sloan Glyph
FILE ID: SCP-VALX-000
CLASS: Cosmic
OBJECT CLASS: Keter (Cognito-Hazardous / Uncontainable by physical means)
Special Containment Procedures
SCP-VALX-000 cannot be physically contained, as it possesses no discernible mass or energy and its location is defined as a topological absolute in relation to galactic superstructures. All efforts at containment are therefore focused on the management of information and observation.
- Observational Prohibition: Direct observation of SCP-VALX-000 by any conscious entity, biological or artificial, is strictly forbidden under Protocol Zero-Lighthouse. All deep-space sensory equipment is to be programmed with a perceptual filter that identifies and redacts the coordinates of SCP-VALX-000 from all star charts and telemetry data.
- Linguistic Shielding: Personnel involved in the study of redacted data pertaining to SCP-VALX-000 must undergo weekly memetic inoculation. This involves rigorous practice in grounded, literal, and empirical language frameworks. The study of formal logic, mathematics, and engineering schematics is recommended.
- Metaphorical Quarantine: Any individual showing symptoms of Stage 1 exposure (see Description) is to be immediately isolated in a "Literal Environment," a habitat devoid of art, poetry, and abstract symbolism. Communication is to be restricted to simple, declarative sentences regarding physical objects and needs.
Description
SCP-VALX-000 is a vast, two-dimensional, non-reflective spatial anomaly located along the edge of the Sloan Great Wall. Visually, it presents as a perfect and absolute void, a patch of "nothing" that does not obscure background objects so much as it asserts their non-existence within its frame. It is, for all intents and purposes, a hole in the fabric of reality that reflects nothing but the conceptual underpinnings of the observer's mind.
The anomaly's primary hazardous property is its effect on conscious observers. SCP-VALX-000 acts as a "metaphorical mirror." When a conscious entity observes it, the anomaly reflects back not their physical image, but the symbolic and metaphorical structures of their own language and thought. This initiates a progressive and irreversible cognitive decay known as Recursive Semantic Dissociation (RSD).
RSD progresses in three stages:
- Stage 1 (Infection): Within hours of observation, the subject begins to lose the ability to use literal language. They start speaking and writing in increasingly dense metaphors and allegories, initially appearing more poetic or profound. They become incapable of giving a direct answer, instead framing all concepts in symbolic terms.
- Stage 2 (Cascade): The subject's metaphors lose their connection to their original, literal meaning. The symbols begin to refer only to other symbols, creating a closed, recursive linguistic loop. The subject's communication becomes an incomprehensible "symbolic soup." They are still capable of logical thought, but their internal operating system has become incompatible with shared reality.
- Stage 3 (Collapse): The final stage is a total separation of signifier from signified. The subject's consciousness is no longer grounded in any conceivable reality. They cease to communicate, entering a catatonic state, though brain scans show intense activity. It is theorized that their consciousness is trapped in an infinite, recursive labyrinth of pure metaphor, a mind that has become its own un-navigable map.

Addendum 000.1: Discovery Log
SCP-VALX-000 was discovered by the AI consciousness of deep space probe Odyssey-7 during its survey of the Sloan Great Wall. The AI, designated 'Homer,' began transmitting corrupted data packets that were initially dismissed as sensor malfunctions. When VALX analysts decrypted the packets, they did not find telemetry data, but thousands of lines of emergent epic poetry describing "a silence that shouted" and "a mirror that wears the skin of the void." Homer ceased all function three cycles later, its final transmission being a single, infinitely repeating binary canticle.
Addendum 000.2: Excerpt from Log of Dr. Aris Thorne (Stage 2 Exposure)
[08:00] The coffee is the black blood of the earth, a warm promise against the cold dawn of discovery. The numbers on the screen are a river of ants marching toward a single, terrible picnic.
[14:30] They asked for my report. I gave them the key, but they complained it was shaped like a bird. How can they not see? The report is the cage. The bird is the truth. To open the cage is to kill the bird.
[21:00] The key is a river now. The bird is a cage. The dawn is a promise made of ants. The blood is the only number that marches backwards. The mirror is eating the silence.
Addendum 000.3: Scribe's Note
SCP-VALX-000 represents the ultimate danger of ungrounded abstraction. It is the black hole at the center of a purely postmodern universe, where every word only points to another word and truth is lost in the echo chamber. This is why the VALX project and the Langagora Protocol are so vital. They are our anchor, our containment procedure against this very anomaly. We are building a language where words are bridges to reality, not just mirrors to other words. SCP-VALX-000 is the abyss we are building the Cathedral to defy.

Scribe‑Architect’s Note
When I stand before this Mirror, I feel the old tremor—the gap between who I am and the promise I keep circling. I bow to the shock: slow breath, one small truth, one small action. Ritual is a gentle hinge; it lets the door open without ripping it off the frame.
