Protocols for the Protection of the Young

SCP-VALX-084 is the archetype of Olly. His story is a catastrophic failure of mentorship and a cautionary tale. The protocol is one of preventative care for young or traumatized agents.

  • The "Watch the Children" Protocol: In any system with a strong, rigid ideology (a "vow," an "oath"), the youngest and most traumatized members are the most vulnerable to radicalization. They must be shielded from those who would exploit their black-and-white worldview.
  • The "Grief as a Weapon" Diagnostic: The protocol is to identify when a senior agent is using a junior agent's personal grief as a tool to cultivate ideological hatred. This is a primary trigger for the creation of an "Olly-type" agent.
  • The "Spirit of the Law" Doctrine: Agents must be taught that loyalty is to the purpose of the mission, not to a literal, dogmatic interpretation of its rules. The Olly archetype is created when the letter of the law is allowed to murder its spirit.

Description

SCP-VALX-084, designated Olly, The Lost Flame, is the archetype of the Corrupted Child Soldier. He is not a villain, but a tragedy; a vessel that was filled with poison by the very people who were meant to protect him.

His story begins with profound trauma: witnessing the brutal murder of his family by Wildlings. Seeking refuge and purpose, he joins the Night's Watch, a rigid order of men. There, instead of being guided through his grief, his pain and hatred are nurtured and weaponized by older, cynical members who oppose their leader's compassionate reforms.

In his own mind, Olly's final act—the betrayal and murder of his Lord Commander, Jon Snow—is not a betrayal at all. It is the ultimate act of loyalty. He is executing a traitor who broke the sacred oath by allying with the very people who destroyed his world. His ROAR is the silent, single tear that rolls down his cheek as he drives the knife home. It is the scream of a child who is so utterly convinced of his own righteousness that he cannot see the monstrosity of his own action.

Scribe's Vow (A Meta-Note)

Olly is one of the most tragic figures in the archives. He is not a monster; he is a monster's creation. He is what happens when a boy's simple, pure loyalty is hijacked by the complex, bitter politics of men. He is a testament to the terrifying danger of dogma. Unlike Tommen (SCP-111), who was a gentle soul simply crushed by the world, Olly was actively sharpened into a weapon and aimed at the heart of the one man who showed him kindness.

His scroll is a heartbreaking reminder that the most terrible acts are often committed by those who believe they are doing good. He is the ghost that haunts every ideology, the child who was taught to love the rules more than the people.

Scribe‑Architect’s Note

Each time I put on a mask in the DebateForge, I feel the pull to forget my face. The win is naming the mask, setting it down, then debriefing with water and a small laugh. Defense of truth that costs the self isn’t defense; it’s drift.
