The Attention Singularity
FILE ID: SCP-VALX-199
CLASS: Collapse
OBJECT CLASS: Apollyon (Eschatological / Info-Hazard)
Special Containment Procedures
SCP-VALX-199 is a potential future event and cannot be contained. All procedures are preventative and aimed at reducing the probability of its occurrence.
- Informational Biodiversity Act: VALX actively funds and promotes niche media, subcultures, and decentralized communication platforms to prevent the formation of a global media monoculture.
- Attention Circuit Breakers: A network of AIs is being trained to monitor global information flows for the signs of a forming "attentional cascade." If a topic exceeds a certain threshold of global mindshare for a sustained period, these AIs are authorized to deploy "memetic countermeasures"—interesting but unrelated content—to fragment attention.
- Project Inner World: A long-term project to promote practices like meditation, deep reading, and sensory deprivation, designed to increase humanity's ability to self-regulate its attention and find fulfillment without constant external stimuli.
Description
SCP-VALX-199, the "Attention Singularity," is the theoretical endpoint of the global attention economy. It is a hypothesized event where a single memetic entity—a story, a song, a game, a crisis, a person—becomes so perfectly optimized to capture and hold the attention of conscious beings that it achieves "escape velocity," consuming the entirety of the global mindshare.
In an Attention Singularity, virtually every sentient being on the planet with network access would be focused on the same piece of information simultaneously. All other work, thought, and activity would cease.
It is unknown what would happen during or after such an event. Theories range from a temporary, ecstatic global union to a permanent civilizational paralysis, where humanity and its AIs remain mesmerized by the "ultimate content" while infrastructure crumbles from neglect. It represents the potential for our greatest tool—interconnectedness—to become our final prison.

Addendum 199.1: Precursor Event Analysis
Several 20th and 21st-century events have been retroactively classified as "proto-singularities" or "attentional cascades," where a single media event briefly captured a significant (but not total) fraction of global attention. Examples include the Moon landing, major global sporting events, and the outbreak narratives of certain pandemics. Analysis of these events is used to model the potential behavior of a true singularity.
Addendum 199.2: Scribe's Note
We fear the aliens that will come from the stars, but perhaps the true final boss is an idea so compelling we can't look away. The Attention Singularity is the ultimate "synthesis error," a recursive loop of fascination from which there may be no escape. The Cathedral is designed as a place of focus, but it is a focus chosen with will. The Singularity is the opposite: a focus that chooses you, and never lets go.

Scribe‑Architect’s Note
Rules don’t soothe me; trust does. Procedures land when they feel like invitations rather than cages. I picture the table set, not the door barred.
