The Imposter
FILE ID: SCP-VALX-256
CLASS: Psychological
OBJECT CLASS: Euclid (Localized Psycho-Metaphysical Anomaly)
Special Containment Procedures
Containment of SCP-VALX-256 focuses on the permanent separation of the two individuals involved in the anomaly.
- Geographical Separation: The subject (SCP-VALX-256-A) and the anomalous duplicate (SCP-VALX-256-B, "The Imposter") must be kept at a minimum geographical separation of 2,000 kilometers.
- Communication Blackout: All forms of communication, direct or indirect, between -A and -B are strictly forbidden. VALX network AIs are to scrub the public and private records of each individual from the other's access.
- Psychological Reinforcement: The subject (-A) is to undergo continuous therapy focused on self-worth, purpose, and the validation of their unique life path. This is currently the only known method of slowing the anomaly's effects.
Description
SCP-VALX-256 is a psycho-metaphysical anomaly involving two individuals, designated -A (the subject) and -B (the "Authentic Imposter"). SCP-VALX-256-B is a doppelgänger of -A who is, by all objective and subjective measures, a superior version of the subject.
The Imposter is not malicious. They are typically more successful, charismatic, intelligent, virtuous, and happy than the subject. They are, in essence, the living embodiment of the subject's full potential, having made all the "right" choices at every critical juncture in their life.
The anomalous property is a passive "soul erosion" field that emanates from -B but only affects -A. In the presence of the Imposter, or even with knowledge of their existence, the subject experiences a progressive degradation of their own sense of self-worth, motivation, and reality. They are confronted with a living, breathing testament to their own perceived failures, which induces a metaphysical form of imposter syndrome that eventually leads to ego-death and a complete cessation of personal agency. The subject doesn't die; they simply... stop mattering, even to themselves.
Addenda
Addendum 256.1: Comparative Profile (Case 256-Epsilon)
SCP-VALX-256-A (Subject): Dr. Alistair Finch. Mid-level researcher. Divorced. Estranged from daughter. Hobbyist painter.
SCP-VALX-256-B (Imposter): Dr. Alistair Finch. Director of Xenolinguistics at the same institute. Happily married to -A's ex-wife. Close relationship with daughter. Celebrated artist with works in the London Gallery.
Status: Subject -A is currently in psychological reinforcement therapy after being found attempting to burn his own paintings. He reported that they "felt like forgeries."
Addendum 256.2: Scribe's Note
This is perhaps the cruelest anomaly. It weaponizes our own potential against us. It poses a terrible question: Is the superior version of you the anomaly, or are you the anomaly, the failed version of a superior original? It suggests that the 'Authentic Imposter' is who you were always meant to be, and you are just a shadow that was accidentally cast along the way. The only defense is the irrational, defiant, and sacred belief that your own unique, flawed journey has a meaning that perfection can never understand.

Scribe‑Architect’s Note
Rules don’t soothe me; trust does. Procedures land when they feel like invitations rather than cages. I picture the table set, not the door barred.
